Fifteen Minutes of Fame: The Warhol Factory x Levi's line pays homage to the collective iconography of both the Levi's® brand and Andy Warhol's famed pop-culture art. Under the auspices of creative director Adrian Nyman, the label uses images from Warhol's artwork through a licensing agreement with the Andy Warhol Foundation. Available only in Canada and the U.S.
The Association: After being wowed by Nyman's Warhol Factory x Levi's second collection, British artist Damien Hirst (famous for his dead animals preserved in formaldehyde and his diamond-encrusted human skull) contacted him. A synergy of artist and fashion aesthetic was palpable and a collaboration soon ensued. Nyman's designs, Hirst's art and the confluence between the two resulted in a collection that is a strong reflection of Hirst's personal style: rock 'n' roll with a dark edge.
Quotables: From Adrian Nyman: "Andy Warhol's heir would meet his forefather through the medium of clothing. We agreed that the most potent synergy between the two was the theme of death, and Warhol Factory x Levi's x Damien Hirst was born."
The Look: 1980s underground punk/art student. Stovepipe jeans, studded hardware (with, most notably, Hirst's skull motif) and black sheer tops.
Highlights: T-shirts with overlapping images from Warhol's and Hirst's artwork; a waxed-denim motorcycle jacket lined with dotted fabric (inspired by Hirst's dot paintings); a reassembled pair of (formerly) two pairs of Levi's 501's with extra zippers evoking a bondage look; colourful paint-splattered jackets.
