Home Base: New York
The History: For years, designer Stacey Bendet had been in perpetual search for the perfect pair of pants. After years of vintage shopping, tweaking, tailoring and sewing, she set out to make her own. And with that, in 2002, alice + olivia was born. A cashmere-sweater collection was added in 2003, a swimwear line and a men's cashmere-sweater collection in 2004, and a women's ready-to-wear collection in 2005.
The Trademark: By incorporating interesting fabrics, an ultra-flattering fit and a stylish retro vibe, those first pants were an alternative to denim as a daily staple.
What's in a Name: alice + olivia is a combination of Bendet's mother's name and that of an old pet.
Did You Know: Bendet was awarded the first ever "Life in D" award from Ford Fusion (part of the Ford Motor Company), which "recognizes women who combine talents with that little something extra that allows them to break free from convention to enjoy life with style and attitude."
Defining Style: Retro-sophistication.
Spring '08: A hint of the '70s. Whimsical carefree clothing and lush, layered dresses as confection-like as candy and cakes.
Inspiration: Alice in Wonderland.
Highlights: Brightly coloured pleated dresses (think of the tea-party scene from Alice in Wonderland) and long '70s-style butterfly dresses (reminiscent of the caterpillar scene).
