The Louis Vuitton Pre-Spring 2020 Menswear collection is built on spirited clothes for living in
Workwear Shirt. $2,240. Denim Cargo Pants. $2,590.
For the Louis Vuitton Pre-Spring 2020 menswear collection, artistic director Virgil Abloh questions how a particular stage of life—the edge of manhood—affects both a man’s identity and his wardrobe.
Using the streets as inspiration, the resulting collection features a “lifewear”—not streetwear—aesthetic that sees luxury befriend the everyday.
Monogram Legacy Milk Box. $3,050.
It wouldn’t be Abloh without his trademark downside-up sensibility. A crewneck sweater is intarsia’d with a group portrait of the label’s menswear studio—but in outline only. The knit features shadowy figures identified by number, from one through 38.
Overall, proportions skew large—outerwear and cargo pants are oversized and share the same 3-D utility pockets. Sweatshirts get quilted, logo’d denim receives graffiti-like treatments, and tailoring is tweaked just-so to credit it cool.
Abbesses Sneakers. $1,250.
Chains trick out both garments and bags, snaking over sweatshirts and decorating miniature monogrammed trunks. A milk box-shaped bag also features the logo, and comes with a tawny slip pocket for two different looks. Sneakers dominate footwear options, with a chunky silhouette constructed with double piping on the side.
For Pre-Spring 2020, Louis Vuitton reconsiders menswear staples, transforming them into garments suited to all aspects of life.
Blazers come with notched or peak lapels, some single-breasted and others double, while pleats allow trousers to fan out over shoes. Balanced by joggers and cargos, blazer-topped looks gain a guerrilla spirit. Tailoring isn’t just for the office; joggers aren’t merely for the street.
