When designing for Chanel, who could inspire more, sartorially speaking, than Karl Lagerfeld and Coco herself? For her Fall/Winter ready-to-wear collection, artistic director Virginie Viard looked to the two Chanel greats while adding her own sentiment of freedom. Pour sa collection de prêt-à-porter automne-hiver 2020, la directrice artistique Virginie Viard s’est inspirée des deux légendes de Chanel en y ajoutant sa propre dose de liberté.

Coco, known for her passion for horse racing and romance with a polo player, was the jumping off point for a Pegasus motif spotted throughout the collection. Meanwhile, an ‘80s image of Lagerfeld and Anna Piaggi underscored the equestrian messaging, with his puss-in-boots footwear reinterpreted by Viard to add a touch of insouciance to every look. Coco, connue pour sa passion pour les courses hippiques et son idylle avec un joueur de polo, a été le tremplin pour le motif de pégase aperçu dans la collection. Entre-temps, une image des années 1980 de Lagerfeld avec Anna Piaggi mettait en relief le message équestre, avec ses chaussures de chat botté réinterprétées par Viard pour conférer un brin d’insouciance à chaque look.

This windswept attitude accompanies the cuts, designed for the pragmatic woman who likes her romance served up sans flourish. Well, unless it’s in jewel format; the mostly black-and-white palette is anchored by look-at-me belts and bracelets starring cabochon jewels. A mainstay of the house—the tweed jacket—comes painted in a delicate green hue, boasting useful patch pockets while fastened with press-studs for ease-of-wear. The accompanying skirt features a functional zip down the front, while the press-studs adorn many a pant for a smart nod to streetwear. In our new reality, what could be more apt than a show celebrating freedom?
